Family Support

At EAP, we support children and youth in the places where life actually happens, at home, at school, and out in the community. Rather than bringing children into a clinic, we meet them in familiar environments and work within their everyday routines, relationships, and interests.

Our approach is collaborative, flexible, and guided by the child’s comfort, preferences, and assent. We believe that meaningful learning happens best when children feel safe, respected, and understood.

You can expect our team to:

  • Spend time getting to know your child — who they are, what they enjoy, how they communicate, and what helps them feel regulated and safe

  • Work alongside parents and caregivers, recognizing you as experts on your child

  • Build skills within natural routines (mealtimes, play, getting ready for school, community outings), rather than relying on drills or table‑based work

  • Focus on supporting goals that matter to you and your child such as: communication, emotional regulation, and self‑advocacy

  • Adapt the environment and expectations to support your child, rather than trying to “fix” the child

  • Provide family coaching and supports rather than only focusing on the child

Programs are individualized and change over time as your child grows, their needs shift, and their goals evolve.

Assent is central to everything we do.

This means we:

  • Check in with your child’s comfort and willingness to participate throughout sessions

  • Respect verbal and non‑verbal communication (including body language, AAC, gestures, or "behaviour")

  • Pause, adjust, or stop activities if a child shows signs of distress or withdraws assent

  • Offer choices and support re‑engagement on the child’s terms

We never force participation, eye contact, or compliance. If a child says “no” — verbally or in another way — we listen. Our goal is to help children feel safe expressing their needs and advocating for themselves, not to teach them to comply.

What Our Services Don’t Look Like

Families often ask what makes our approach different. Here are a few things our services do NOT involve:

  • Forced compliance or “following instructions” at all costs

  • Suppressing stimming, movement, or self‑regulation strategies that are not harmful

  • Ignoring a child’s distress in order to “finish the session”

  • One‑size‑fits‑all programs or rigid therapy schedules

  • Prioritizing data over the individual's lived experience

Our Team & How We Work

Our team includes Supervising Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (Director/BCBA), BCBAs, Junior Consultants, and Senior Behaviour Interventionists who work together to provide thoughtful supervision and consistent support.

Consultants partner with families to create a Service Support Plan that reflects:

  • Your child’s strengths, interests, and communication style

  • Family priorities and values

  • Goals that are child/youth centred and identity affirming

Behaviour Interventionists and caregivers receive ongoing coaching and support, and we’re always happy to help families connect with BIs if needed. We also collaborate closely with other professionals involved in your child’s life, such as occupational therapists, speech‑language pathologists, and educators.
