Home Learners

Our Directors are both parents of neurodivergent children and have many years of experience supporting families who have chosen home learning for their children. Two of Thea's children are currently home learners after years of struggling with the public brick and mortar system. Our approach to supports come from a place of lived experience and understanding. We love collaborating with families to support their own vision of home learning.

We now offer a variety of services for Home Learners and their families including:

  • Home Learner Behaviour Supports/Consulting

  • Social/Interest groups (during the school day!)

  • Workshops (e.g., Self-Identity for Neurodivergent Youth)

Home Learners Package 1:
Home Learning Consultation & Family Coaching

This package offers individualized consultation and family‑centred coaching to support neurodivergent children and youth who are learning from home. Services are grounded in a neurodiversity‑affirming, compassionate, and practical approach, with a focus on building routines, environments, and supports that work for the whole family.

Rather than focusing on “fixing” the child, we work collaboratively with caregivers to reduce barriers to learning, increase regulation and engagement, and support sustainable home‑learning practices. Supports are flexible, strengths‑based, and tailored to each family’s values, priorities, and learning context.

Areas of support may include:

  • Setting up supportive home learning environments

  • Developing flexible daily and weekly schedules

  • Identifying and using sensory tools and regulation strategies

  • Supporting executive functioning skills (planning, organization, task initiation)

  • Strengthening family routines and expectations

  • Caregiver coaching, reflection, and collaborative problem‑solving

An initial intake meeting helps us understand each child/youth's preferences, strengths, support needs, and goals as well as identifying key family values,  priorities and challenges. This means that our supports are highly individualized and collaborative from the start. Services are delivered by trained team members under the supervision of a BCBA, providing ethical, evidence‑based oversight.

This package is well‑suited for home‑learning families seeking practical, proactive support and may be eligible for Online Learning (OL) funding, including Inclusive Education (IE) and general education OL placements, subject to approval.

This package emphasizes capacity‑building, helping families feel more confident and supported in their home‑learning journey.

Home Learners Package 2:
Comprehensive Home Learning Support

The Comprehensive Home Learning Support package is designed for families who require deeper, ongoing collaboration to support access to meaningful learning at home. This may include families navigating significant regulation challenges, executive functioning needs, distress related to learning, or multiple barriers impacting engagement.

Services are family‑centred, neurodiversity‑affirming, and access‑focused, with an emphasis on safety, regulation, autonomy, and sustainability. Distress is understood as communication, and supports focus on changing environments, expectations, and supports rather than increasing demands on the child or youth.

This package may support families with:

  • Ongoing distress or dysregulation interfering with learning

  • Sensory or nervous system needs that require careful planning

  • Executive functioning challenges impacting follow‑through and engagement

  • Burnout, school avoidance, or transitions to home learning

  • IEP‑related goals connected to participation, independence, and access

Supports may include environmental adjustments, sensory and regulation strategies, executive functioning supports, and caregiver coaching around responding to distress in ways that reduce escalation and protect the child or youth’s dignity and autonomy.

Services include extended intake and planning, regular consultation sessions, and ongoing adjustment of strategies based on family feedback and the child or youth’s experience. This package is delivered by the EAP team with direct and ongoing BCBA clinical oversight, ensuring ethical, responsive, and evidence‑based practice.

The Comprehensive Home Learning Support package is particularly appropriate for families accessing OL funding with Inclusive Education (IE) designations, and may also be eligible for AFU or OL/IE funding, subject to approval.

Home Learners Package 3:
Behaviour Supports

Best for: Home‑learning families where distressed behaviours are interfering with access to meaningful learning opportunities, daily routines, or family well‑being.

Program Description

This consultation package is designed for neurodivergent children and youth whose distress, overwhelm, or unmet needs are making it difficult to engage in learning at home. Rather than focusing on reducing or managing behaviour, this service centers on understanding what the behaviour is communicating and changing the environment, expectations, and supports to reduce distress and increase access to learning.

Supports are family‑centred, collaborative, and neurodiversity‑affirming, with an emphasis on safety, regulation, autonomy, and assent. Distressed behaviours are understood as a signal that something is not working for the child or youth — and our role is to help families identify and address those barriers.

This program is particularly appropriate when:

  • Distress, shutdown, avoidance, or escalations are limiting learning

  • Transitions, demands, or schedules feel overwhelming

  • Sensory needs are not being adequately supported

  • Executive functioning demands exceed current capacity

  • Learning has become a source of conflict or burnout for the family

  •

Areas of Support May Include:

  • Understanding why distress is occurring (sensory, cognitive, emotional, environmental factors)

  • Identifying triggers and stressors that interfere with learning

  • Supporting regulation and nervous system safety before learning demands

  • Adjusting learning expectations, pacing, and task demands

  • Implementing sensory supports and regulation tools

  • Teaching and supporting functional communication of needs and boundaries

  • Supporting executive functioning (task initiation, planning, flexibility)

  • Coaching caregivers on responding to distress in ways that reduce escalation

  • Creating learning routines that are flexible, predictable, and sustainable

All recommendations are assent‑based, and supports are adjusted if a child or youth communicates (verbally or non‑verbally) that something is not working.

Services are delivered by trained staff with and/or under the supervision of a BCBA, with regular case review and clinical oversight.

What’s Included

  • Initial intake and collaborative planning meeting with BCBA (90 minutes)

  • 6 follow‑up consultation and coaching sessions with BCBA (90 minutes each)

  • Individualized behaviour support recommendations

  • Ongoing collaboration and adjustment

  • Light email check‑ins between sessions as needed

  •

Services are delivered by a BCBA. 1:1 BI or Consultant Services can be added to this package if needed
